As a comedy nerd I’m obligated to like Mystery Team, a self-funded movie by a small group of guys just out of college, relatively unknown outside of the NYC comedy scene and their internet following.

It’s a highly ambitious movie that mostly succeeds. Great production quality with several guest appearances from notable comics (though not so notable that I’ll note them here) including, serendipitously, someone from each of the current crop of NBC comedies.

While I wouldn’t say they hit it out of the park, the movie is reliably funny the whole way through with some laugh out loud moments.  And the plot and characters are more than just a framework to lay unrelated jokes on; they prove to be sustainable for the length of the movie and keep it enjoyable through some of it’s slower moments.

The movie is not a Hollywood release so it doesn’t have the frantic pace of an Appatow or other big name comedy flick, but it’s more than worthwhile to catch as a great example of what some funny, talented people can do when they get a half way decent idea and some money.
